Vitamins and minerals assist the body with physiological functions and are crucial to the maintenance of our immune system, skin, never impulses, energy production and many more, here are some facts about them…

Fat soluble and water soluble vitamins – Some vitamins are water soluble and some are fat soluble, what this means is the water soluble vitamins can be absorbed by the body with just water while the fat soluble vitamins(A,D,E,K) need to be consumed with dietary fat. This is why its important to take a multi vitamin pill with food. Also fat soluble vitamins can be stored in the fat cells and liver while water soluble vitamins are used and excreted daily, this is why its important to replenish these water soluble one’s daily!

Vitamin C – Vitamin C offers so many benefits to the body, immune function cell repair, acts as an antioxidant and is needed in the formation of collagen used to help skin, gums, teeth repair. Vitamin C was overlooked until 1747 when the surgeon of the British royal navy conducted a trial on sailors who concluded vitamin C deficiency was the culprit for the rise in scurvy amongst sailors, the surgeon ordered all sailors eat a lime every day during tour, this is how the English got the nickname “limeys” from the Americans…

Vitamin A – Vitamin A was named after the first letter in the alphabet because it was discovered first. Vitamin A is also toxic in large amounts and there is enough vitamin A in a polar bears liver to kill a man, in fact there was an incident where 2 arctic explorers who were snowed in with their sled dogs, the two men began to starve so they killed their dogs and ate their liver. The men were later found dead and the autopsy concluded toxic levels of  vitamin A in both men’s blood. So some vitamin A is good for your eyesight, skin and general health, but too much (like when people consume more then 3 carrots a day) is bad!
